Jibanta Shikarer Setu is a groundbreaking collaborative translation project that bridges the linguistic and cultural gap between Khasi and Bengali literature. Led by Mrinmoy Pramanick, assistant professor and recent “Sahitya Akademi Awardee,” this innovative classroom initiative engaged students of the Department of Comparative Indian Language and Literature, University of Calcutta in a collective effort to translate Kynpham Sing Nongkynrih’s The Yearning of Seeds. This book not only balances preserving the original poetic form and cultural nuances but also intensely delves into the rich cultural and political undertones of the Northeast, exploring themes of love, loss, identity, and social justice by rendering Khasi poetry, including haiku and senryu, into Bengali, bridging linguistic and cultural divides, and making the work accessible to a wider readership. This collaborative translation project not only offers a valuable contribution to the field of literature and translation but also highlights the transformative power of collective learning. By bringing Khasi poetry to a wider Bengali audience, Jibanta Shikarer Setu fosters intercultural understanding and appreciation for diverse literary traditions.
